History

Olivier Daigre and Marie Gaudet – our Acadian heritage Daigle

Based on numerous genealogy research, all Daigle Acadians would be descendants of Olivier Daigre, possibly from Aigre, in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. Born in 1643, he would have arrived in Acadia around 1664, possibly crossing over on the boat ‘La Paix’ commanded by Elie Siberon, and hired by Emmanuel Le Borgne du Coudron, Seigneur de Port-Royal.

Extensive research done by Daigle cousins in Poitou-Charente, have not been able to locate any records of Olivier’s parents and ancestors, since a lot of records before XVI century were lost.1 (1)

Olivier married Marie Gaudet around 1666. Marie, born in 1651, was the daughter of Denis Gaudet and Martine Gauthier. The first official census of Acadia was taken in 1671. It is from the notes based on this census, that we have been able to establish the birth date of Olivier and best guess the year of their marriage since a lot of civil records were destroyed during the deportation.

This is a new website, and our vision is that in the near future, this site will host historical research on where the Daigles settled, whether in Kent County communities or in Claire, New Brunswick, Louisiana, in Quebec, Belles-Îles-sur-Mer and other parts of France. We hope that Daigle cousins from these and other regions will contact us to share their information and contribute to our Daigle history and culture.
